China is relatively a late starter in research of large-scale energy storage systems (ESSs) and energy storage power stations. However, China has witnessed rapid development in early-stage application, such as system integration and function verification, and it has built up several large-scale battery-based energy storage power stations.
In 2021, China saw over 2.3 GW of installed electrochemical ESS capacity, a 50% YoY increase. Among which, 40% was from the generation side, 35% from the grid side, and 25% the end user side. Supportive policy framework is the major driver behind such increases. Many Chinese provinces have set energy storage targets since 2021.
Localities have reiterated the central government’s goal of developing an integrated format of “new energy + storage” (such as “solar + storage”), with a required energy storage allocation rate of between 10% and 20%. China has created an energy storage ecosystem with players throughout the supply chain.
